A mathematician and aerodynamicist of the older generation: he studied in Kharkov and in Montpellier, France, and worked under Polikarpov. To the young Mikoyan he was the chief theorist — the “G” in MiG is his. He handled the calculations and aerodynamics of the first MiGs and later led the bureau’s cruise missile work. He retired in 1964, a Hero of Socialist Labour.

Pavel Sukhoi

Pavel Osipovich Sukhoi

General Designer, Sukhoi bureau

Born in the Belarusian town of Glubokoye and a protégé of Tupolev: at TsAGI he led the team that built the record-breaking ANT-25, in which Chkalov flew over the North Pole to America. From 1939 he headed his own bureau. His Su-7, Su-9, Su-15, Su-24 and the steel Mach-3 T-4 “Sotka” were ahead of their time. He never saw the Su-27 fly: work on the T-10 began under him, but its first flight came a year and a half after his death.

Andrei Nikolayevich Tupolev

General Designer, Tupolev bureau; academician

A pupil of Nikolai Zhukovsky and a founder of TsAGI. In the 1920s he was the first in the country to build all-metal aircraft from kolchugalyuminium. Arrested on false charges in 1937, he designed the Tu-2 in prison, in a design bureau run by the NKVD; he was released in 1941 but rehabilitated only in 1955. Over a hundred aircraft types were built under his leadership, from bombers to the supersonic Tu-144. The Tu-160 came after his death, but the bureau bearing his name saw it through.

Kelly Johnson

Clarence “Kelly” Johnson

Skunk Works, LockheedFounder of the Skunk Works, Lockheed

The son of Swedish immigrants from Michigan, he joined Lockheed in 1933. He created the P-38 Lightning, America’s first jet fighter the P-80, the F-104 Starfighter and the U-2 and A-12/SR-71 spy planes — the last already featuring radar-signature reduction. Author of the Skunk Works “14 Rules” and the principle of “keep it simple”. Johnson was at first sceptical of the stealth idea, but it was his school and his shop that made the F-117 possible.

Benjamin R. Rich

Руководитель Skunk Works в 1975–1991Head of the Skunk Works, 1975–1991

Born in Manila, he joined Lockheed in 1950 as a thermodynamicist and worked out the SR-71’s inlets and structural heating. In 1975 he succeeded Kelly Johnson as head of the Skunk Works and bet on Have Blue — the demonstrator that grew into the F-117. He is called the “father of stealth”. Shortly before his death he wrote the memoir “Skunk Works”, revealing many of the shop’s secrets for the first time.

Harry J. Hillaker

F-16, General DynamicsChief designer of the F-16, General Dynamics

An engineer at Convair and General Dynamics in Fort Worth who worked on the supersonic B-58 Hustler and the F-111 — and the “father of the F-16”. Together with Colonel John Boyd and a group of enthusiasts nicknamed the “Fighter Mafia”, he championed a light, agile fighter against the fashion for heavy, expensive jets. The F-16’s key ideas are his: computer control of an unstable airframe, the side-stick and the all-round-view canopy.
